Dear Members and Friends of the League,
In February 1920, the League of Women Voters was founded when Carrie Chapman Catt proposed it in order to empower women voters newly enfranchised by the Nineteenth Amendment. She asked, "What is the League? A group of enfranchised women who want not merely to vote, but to vote for something. The vote is a tool with which to work, and...now they want to build a better world for their neighbors and their posterity."
Since that time, the League has grown into a national organization with local, county, and state chapters. We are a nonpartisan organization that encourages active participation in all levels of government. The League does not support or oppose candidates for political office, but it does support or oppose issues after careful study and membership consensus. The League seeks to influence public policy through citizen education and advocacy.
The League of Women Voters of Brookhaven, active since 1949, assists citizens with voter education by registering voters, moderating candidates debates, and publishing information about candidates and propositions. A League representative monitors Town Board meetings and reports on issues before our Town government. Currently, League members are studying land preservation, safe and affordable housing, the death penalty, and are preparing a Know Your Town informational booklet. In conjunction with leagues at all levels of government, the Brookhaven League actively supports a range of issues, from international cooperation and solutions to global warming to equal opportunity and equitable financing for education to campaign finance, election reform,
and health care reform.
As we consider the challenges of the world around us, we invite you to join with us to find the best and fairest solutions, knowing that an informed and involved citizenry is the best protection for democracy.
