THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS ®
OF HUNTINGTON

The LWV of Huntington requests that you support precinct-based optical scan voting systems with accessible marking devices to replace lever voting machines currently in use in New York State.  The League endorses these systems because they best meet League criteria of security, accuracy, recount, and accessibility.

According to Election Data Services, optical scan voting systems have been in use in the US in elections for 20 years and were used in 46% of counties, 36% of precincts, and 35% of registered voters in the 2004 election.  In the future, seven states will use optical scan exclusively, and 37 will use it as part of mixed systems of voting to meet HAVA (Help America Vote Act of 2002) requirements.  The technology is tested and proven, contrary to that of direct recording electronic systems (DRE’s), which lack transparency and are not fully equipped and certified with disabled accessibility and voter verification features (expected to be required in NYS HAVA legislation under negotiation).
