Proposed Program 2006-2007
1. COUNTY GOVERNMENT
COUNTY CHARTER
Action in support of measures to make the Suffolk County Charter a more efficient framework for County government.
COUNTY LEGISLATURE
Support of the County Legislature as the appropriate legislative branch of government for Suffolk County.
DIVISION OF SUFFOLK COUNTY
Support of a process for the formation of new counties that would give all of the existing county the opportunity to make their views known to the New York State Legislature. This could be accomplished through the public’s participation in advisory committees to negotiators on the division of assets and liabilities, home rule messages from elected representatives, an advisory referendum for all county residents or such other means that would inform legislators of the public will.
2. COUNTY DEVELOPMENT
Action in support of measures to preserve our essential natural resources while helping to provide for the orderly growth and development of Suffolk County.
3. RESOURCE RECOVERY
Action in support of mandatory regulations to reduce the generation of solid and hazardous waste and to promote the reuse and recycling of such waste with incineration as a last resort method of disposal.
4. SOCIAL POLICY
Support life planning education in Suffolk County with emphasis on preparation for parenthood, in order to encourage social change toward: promoting equal access to education, promoting self sufficiency, preventing poverty, preventing violence, preventing teen pregnancy, and promoting the well being, full development and safety of all children.
5. AFFORDABLE HOUSING
Action in support of meeting the current and future housing needs of all citizens, regardless of economic circumstance, with a diversity of affordable housing opportunities and types (ownership and rentals and single and multiple dwellings). That they should be located, as much as possible, in proximity to places of employment, transportation, recreation and commercial development, thereby broadening access to the job market and community facilities
